How did we get here?

Here's a look at the major developments in the case against Whiteclay's beer stores over the past 10 months:

*** Oct. 11, 2016** — Sheridan County Commissioner Jack Andersen tells a panel of state lawmakers that the county "absolutely" lacks resources for adequate law enforcement in Whiteclay.

*** Nov. 1** — Citing Andersen's comments, the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission raises the bar for the beer stores to remain open, ordering the owners to submit "long form" reapplications for their liquor licenses. All four do.

*** Jan. 9, 2017** — Some Sheridan County residents file formal protests of the licenses.

*** Jan. 11** — Sheridan County commissioners vote unanimously to recommend approval of the liquor licenses. The decision came after 10 minutes of discussion, four days after a public hearing in Rushville.

*** April 6** — Liquor Commission holds formal hearing on the licenses at the state Capitol.

*** April 19** — Liquor Commission votes unanimously to deny renewal of the Whiteclay stores' licenses, citing lack of adequate law enforcement. Beer stores appeal the following week in Lancaster County District Court.

*** April 27** — Lancaster County District Judge Andrew Jacobsen reverses Liquor Commission's decision, but immediate appeal by state of Nebraska puts Jacobsen's order on hold while case is reviewed by higher court.

*** April 29** — Whiteclay beer stores close indefinitely, one day before their licenses expire.

*** May 2** — Nebraska Supreme Court accepts appeal. 

*** May 24** — At request of beer stores, Supreme Court expedites appeal process, sets oral arguments for Aug. 29.
