Impact of local refugees

In 2015, Nebraska led the nation in resettling more refugees per capita than any other state, but those numbers have plummeted as President Donald Trump's administration has scaled back on the program.

Refugee admissions in the U.S. were capped at 45,000 in 2017, the lowest admission number in three decades and less than half of the 110,000 refugees who migrated to the U.S. in 2016. And reports indicate Trump may lower the cap even further next year.

These changes are already reverberating through Nebraska, which is increasingly relying on foreign-born residents for population growth. About 95 percent of the state's growth was attributable to minorities in the past decade, while the white population barely grew, said David Drozd, research coordinator at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Because population growth fuels the economy with more demand for goods and services, fewer resettlements affect the state, Drozd said.

Other factors like births and secondary migration also drive population growth. In Lincoln, the already-established communities draw refugees and immigrants looking for a place to call home.

“Even if we don’t have initial resettlements, people will have the second moves for specialty shops, people speaking their language, cultural connections,” Drozd said.

In a two-day series, the Journal Star will explore the economic impact of local refugees as employees and entrepreneurs and examine how a severe resettlement cap could affect local refugee communities and the city of Lincoln.
