FLOODING 2019

9. 'Just a terrible mess' — Ranchers, farmers left with dead animals, flooded fields, work to be done

1 of 8

Flooding-Farmers, 3.22

More than 75 percent of Dave Eaton's farm near Union remains covered by Missouri River floodwater in late March.

Flooding-Farmers, 3.22

When the floodwater got into Dave Eaton's grain bin, the corn swelled and pressed against the bin walls, splitting it at the seams.

Dave Eaton stands in front of one of his damaged grain bins at his farm near Union, which has been in his family for 152 years. "This flood is the first flood where leaving has ever crossed my mind, but I don't want to be the guy that loses the family farm."

Floodwater covers Dave Eaton's farmland in the Missouri River bottomland near Union. He's worried the water will remain on his land and prevent him from planting this year.

A marker records the 2019 high water mark in Dave Eaton's barn. A mark from 2011, closer to the floor, indicates the difference in water levels from the two floods.

Dave Eaton lost some calves in the flooding of his farm near Union.

Dave Eaton's cattle are sharing a paddock with farm equipment in the Missouri River bottomland near Union. Eaton moved the cattle up on the hill before their grazing land was flooded, but he has had to supplement their diet heavily with hay because not as much grass is available.

Dave Eaton isn't sure he'll get much planted this year because Missouri River floodwater is covering about 300 acres of his farm near Union.

A cow and calf at the Crawford Ranch in the midst of the snowstorm in Box Butte County on March 13. The ranch, which was in the midst of calving when the winter storm hit, lost a few calves, said Mary Crawford, whose husband, Wayne, runs the ranch.
