Whiteclay

Sheridan County Sheriff Terry Robbins checks on a drunk man lying in front of an abandoned building in Whiteclay in October 2016. Robbins said then he was only able to spend a couple hours in the town each week, and there’s not a lot he can do to help the people on the street.

Whiteclay

Rules are spelled out on a sign at the border of Whiteclay and the Pine Ridge Reservation.

A can of Camo Black Ice, with an alcohol content of 10.5 percent, sits with other debris in the weeds behind an abandoned home on Nebraska 87 in Whiteclay.

Whiteclay as seen from the south last October. A judge Thursday ruled the town's four beer stores can renew their liquor licenses despite an order by a state commission denying the renewals last week. But later Thursday, the state Attorney General's office appealed the ruling, staying the Lancaster County district court judge's decision.

Hearings Thursday

Sheridan County commissioners will gather public input this week on whether Whiteclay's beer stores should retain their liquor licenses.

A series of public hearings Thursday in Rushville aren't expected to end with a final decision, but county commissioners can make a recommendation to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission.

The liquor board is expected to hold its own hearings on the subject in the coming months.

Whiteclay

Sheridan County Sheriff Terry Robbins checks on a drunk man lying in front of an abandoned building in Whiteclay in October 2016. Robbins said then he was only able to spend a couple hours in the town each week, and there’s not a lot he can do to help the people on the street.

Vietnam veteran Bryan Brewer (left) talks about Pine Ridge Reservation issues as Naval veteran Daniel Bearrunner looks on.
