One of the first documented signs of trouble in the Nebraska's Correctional Center for Women’s water system occurred in 2014, when a water sample taken from a single building on the York campus offered an early indication of the issue that would afflict the facility’s water system for years to come.

In 2018 a consultant suggested one of the main options to address water quality issues at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York, besides chemical treatment, was to replace the prison's pipes. But corrections staff said it was “not a feasible alternative” due to the cost and the logistics of replacing the prison’s pipes while maintaining prison security.

A 200,000-gallon water tower tank stands over the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York. For nearly a decade, inmates at Nebraska's only women's prison have been raising concerns about the facility’s water. 

In 2018 a consultant suggested one of the main options to address water quality issues at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York, besides chemical treatment, was to replace the prison's pipes. But corrections staff said it was “not a feasible alternative” due to the cost and the logistics of replacing the prison’s pipes while maintaining prison security.

One of the first documented signs of trouble in the Nebraska's Correctional Center for Women’s water system occurred in 2014, when a water sample taken from a single building on the York campus offered an early indication of the issue that would afflict the facility’s water system for years to come.
