Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Kingdon Hawes was acting commander of the 24th Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron on June 5, 1969, the day IRENE 92 — an RC-135E missile-monitoring jet known as “Rivet Amber” — disappeared over the Bering Sea, killing 19 crew members. Fifty-four years later, Hawes stands behind the newly unveiled memorial to the crew at Offutt Air Force Base. More than 100 people attended the September ceremony, including family members and friends of the crew and current airmen who fly the RC-135 Cobra Ball aircraft, which now flies similar missions.
