OMAHA — The seeds of what artist Watie White hopes will be a flourishing 40th Street arts community are appearing one by one on the wall of a second-floor room at Joslyn Castle.

Watie White, the Castle and Cathedral Arts District 2024 artist-in-residence, is drawing portraits that will be shared throughout the neighborhood.

Judy Kennedy said the designation will bring more people to 40th Street.

Amy Richardson said it's a big deal to be named an arts district. 

“Our Castle and Cathedral Creative District is a place where people find connection with one another, where residents and visitors are transformed into neighbors and friends, and where a sense of community is built around extraordinary artistic and inspiring cultural events,” John Paul said.

Businesses on 40th Street will be part of the Castle and Cathedral Arts District. 

Businesses along Cuming Street could also enhance the area with welcoming front doors on the back of the establishments, Watie White said.

“That’s the mission of the Cathedral Arts Project — to bring the arts to the heart of the city,” said Judy Kennedy, president of the arts project board of directors and interim executive director. “Most are free of charge. Working with the castle and Cali Commons we have a common goal. It brings more people to the 40th Street corridor.”

Cali Commons at 40th and California Streets is one of the partners in the arts district project.
