Landowner Lemoyne Dailey says recent damage done to his Sandhills ranch land is one reason he’s opposed to a long-delayed power transmission line being built in the area. He says that Nebraska Public Power District workers damaged this hill, making ruts and doing other damage to the land. He and other opponents contend that the Sandhills ecosystem is too fragile for the transmission line, which supporters say will move power more efficiently across a large swath of the country.

Lemoyne Dailey removes twine from a hay bale for heifers Feb. 13, at his ranch in Thomas County. Dailey uses hay to supplement his cattle's natural grass diet on his Sandhills ranch. He and some other landowners have thus far refused to let the Nebraska Public Power District build a long-proposed transmission line across their land, citing environmental concerns and questioning the project’s tie to wind energy. The project’s proponents say the line will move power more efficiently across Nebraska and nearby states, making rolling blackouts and other problems less likely.

Aurora cranes

The annual sandhill crane migration is in full swing from Hamilton to Buffalo counties. These two magnificent specimens squabbled over breakfast at midmorning Monday just a few miles east of Aurora and north of U.S. 34.

A trio of sandhill cranes come in low on a cornfield on Elm Island Road in Gibbon in March 2011. During the several weeks the cranes spend near the Platte River each year, they consume food to build up fat to use as fuel for the rest of their migration. The majority of this is residue from the fall corn harvest, while the rest is made up of invertebrates such as snails.

Sandhills energy /COPYRIGHT RESTRICTED

Cattle wait to feed on a bale of hay in the late afternoon light at the Dailey Ranch in Thomas County.

Lemoyne Dailey drives a bale of hay out into a field to feed to a group of first-year heifers on his Sandhills ranch.
