“Being the namesake of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery is a nice honor for which I am deeply grateful,” said Hillestad.

• PHOTO BY JOHN F. KELLER

Hillestad uses nature in his textile creations. The ductwork is covered in silk and wool. The Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudí, greatly influenced his work.

Hillestad does much of his work outdoors on what he calls his dye table.

Hillestad has a home workshop, and every basement room is filled to capacity with bolts of fabric, spools of thread and other materials used in his work.

STORY BY BRIAN REETZ / PHOTOS BY JOHN F. KELLER

A few years ago, I was introduced to one of the most humble and talented men I’ve ever had the pleasure to spend time with. We eventually shared soup at his house in Lincoln and carried on a delightful conversation. Later, he came to a wine party at my home. But time moves on and quickly, and we didn’t connect for a while. A couple of months ago, I bumped into him again at an art show opening, and we promised to have soup again soon. So, what a pleasure it was to finally find myself sitting across the plaid table-clothed, two-person kitchen table again from the amazing and dapper Robert Hillestad.
