Letter, 12/6: Frost has bright future

Scott Frost's return to Nebraska has Husker football fans about as excited as we've seen in quite some time. It's been 20 years since Nebraska was even relevant in the NCAA, let alone vying for a championship or even an important bowl game. Perhaps good things are ahead for us.

We should keep something in mind, though: This is not Scott Frost's last coaching job. We've seen that he is a career-minded man, and that his decisions do have other people as factors, but that in the final beat he goes in the direction of what is best for him and his career.

Letter, 12/7: Tax reform votes bad for Nebraska

I’ve been following the tax reform debate and was disappointed, although not surprised, to see Sens. Ben Sasse and Deb Fischer vote in support of it.

News reports said that the GOP was pressured by its donors to pass something. If true, this is even more disappointing. Who do Sasse and Fischer and the rest of the GOP represent?

Letter, 12/7: Politics mustn't harm UNL

I'm sorry that some individuals fail to see the giant difference between working for any state institution and being a professor or instructor at a state university.

University teachers are protected, as they should be, from governmental whims. Without that protection, free exchange of ideas and free discussion would not be able to take place. Hence, the glorious history of our land grant colleges would soon come to an end.

Letter, 12/6: Tax bill hurts Nebraska

While catching up on news in the Journal Star, I saw in Don Walton's column ("Federal tax reform could trickle down," Nov. 27) that "Nebraska is one of 19 states whose residents would pay more in federal taxes in 2027 under the Senate Finance Committee's tax reform package, according to the nonpartisan Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy."

This is another reason to fight this cruel and greedy bill that gives such bonanzas to the extremely rich, hurts higher education and takes money away from health and other services.

Letter, 12/6: NU, give Riley a job

As a lifelong Husker fan, I have something to say: The firing of Mike Riley has been heartbreaking.

Was it the correct move? Yes, I believe it was. I do not think he is the correct head coach for the football team. But I very much believe he belongs here. He is one of us. He brings a level of integrity and class to this university that all of Nebraska should be proud of.

Letter, 12/5: Accusations prompt old warning

In the light of the plethora of accusations of sexual impropriety, from the president down to and out toward numerous persons in many arenas, these words of Alexander Pope (1688-1744) seem straight on target, with a warning:

“Vice is a monster of so frightful mein, As to be hated, needs but to be seen; Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face, We first endure, then pity, then embrace.” — Essay on Man, Epistle 2, line 220.

Letter, 12/5: LB295 helps disadvantaged students

In a recent Local View ("LB 295 would hurt public schools," Nov. 15), Ms. Ann Hunter-Pirtle recognizes that parochial schools, like St. Mary's Catholic School, serve "disadvantaged students whose families select this option."

Ms. Hunter-Pirtle is correct: Our families do "select" this option. However, Ms. Hunter-Pirtle fails to recognize that many do so only because of the financial assistance provided by our school and parish. Many disadvantaged families are not so fortunate.

Letter, 12/4: Hang onto your wallets

Emboldened by the expediency of reconciliation, Republicans in Congress have begun their redemptive chants about tax reform. They are anointing our heads with the snake oil of corporate tax reduction as salvation for the middle class. As with all political prattle, scrutiny is essential.

Lawrence Summers, former Treasury Secretary and current professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, asserts that tax reform requires restructuring the tax code, not simply reducing, reshuffling or reallocating tax funds.

Letter, 12/3: UNL's academic freedom under attack

Three state senators have taken it upon themselves to try to force the University of Nebraska to bow to their political ideologies. These senators are ultra-conservative and would like to see all of the faculty and staff push this ideology onto their students.

Our institutions of higher learning have been — and should always be — about helping students to grow and learn and not be forced to follow a certain belief simply because of political pressure. The political agenda of the senators is unacceptable, and I, for one, am appalled at their actions.

Letter, 12/3: Tuition waivers aren't income

According to Republicans in Congress, I am paid $25,500 by the University of Nebraska. In truth, I only see about $9,400 in my take-home pay. I will never get to see the roughly $16,100 the college "pays" me in my tuition waiver.

I do not get to choose how to spend that, how to invest that, how for it to best benefit me. I cannot keep more of that in a lean month or spend more at the holidays. I cannot use it on rent, utilities or food.

Letter, 12/3: UNL does stifle conservative speech

The recent attempt by a UNL professor, a graduate student, campus police and student union staff (all government employees, several of whom have authority over students) to intimidate a student who was simply trying to recruit for her student organization is reprehensible.

In last Sunday's editorial ("Time for UNL, senators to move past controversy," Nov. 26), the Journal Star editorial board had the temerity — or just plain liberal bias of its own — to claim "there’s not been an iota of proof to demonstrate that Mullen’s situation is somehow indicative of institutional bias against conservatives."

Letter, 12/3: Riley made NU football fun again

I know people will put me down and disagree with me and say that I am wearing rose-colored glasses. But I have enjoyed Nebraska football so much more these past three years than I have since I was in college from 1965-1970.

We have had season football tickets since 1961. I had lost that obsession with attending games. I had lost that killer instinct. I had not cared to watch the antics of coaches on the sidelines.

Letter, 12/3: The case for net neutrality

As a simple history, net neutrality is the treatment of internet service providers as common carriers. In short, that they follow similar regulations to water and electrical services.

FCC docket 17-108, presented by Ajit Pai, proposes to remove these regulations because there is "no concrete evidence" of its necessity.

Letter, 12/2: UNL admits free speech failure

The Journal Star and writer Chris Dunker are to be commended for the article ("Faculty: Politicians using incident to damage university," Nov. 28) that summarizes the history of the current free speech debate surrounding the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The article reports that, as of Oct. 31, "UNL was taking steps to make all students feel welcome on campus." This means that those steps had not been pursued vigorously before Oct. 31.

I was there in the governor’s hearing room. The governor, secretary of state, and attorney general were conducting a hearing that would prepare the way for Randy Reeves to be executed.

After considerable talk among the three officials, Gov. Mike Johanns was left alone up front while the others went to the restroom. The hearing room was tense and quiet.

In the light of the plethora of accusations of sexual impropriety, from the president down to and out toward numerous persons in many arenas, these words of Alexander Pope (1688-1744) seem straight on target, with a warning:
