The best player from the 2006 NFL draft? He wasn't even chosen on the first day.
1
Intro
- By Nick Selbe
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

The 2006 NFL draft was anything but short on star power. Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush was the draft's most high profile player after his electrifying college career. Quarterback Vince Young was fresh off his historic performance in the BCS National Championship Game, where his Texas Longhorns topped Bush's USC Trojans in one of the greatest college football games of all time.
But it was the relatively unknown Mario Williams -- defensive end from North Carolina State -- who ended up going first overall to the Houston Texans. Now a decade later, PointAfter -- a sports visualization site from Graphiq -- looked back on the 2006 draft and re-picked the first round. To make each selection, we focused on a combination of Approximate Value, Pro Bowl berths, All-Pro selections and team need.
There were three quarterbacks taken in the first 11 picks, though only one -- Jay Cutler -- went in the first round of our re-draft. Aside from Cutler, there were simply no other franchise quarterbacks available in this draft class.
Though they were the two most hyped players in the draft, both Bush and Young ended up being disappointments as pros, to varying degrees. While Williams has had a fine career, he clearly didn't end up being the best player from that year's draft. That honor goes to someone who wasn't even chosen on the draft's first day.

#1. OT Jahri Evans
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Houston Texans
Original No. 1 pick: Mario Williams
Original slot for Evans: Fourth round, No. 108 overall
The Texans were still in the midst of the David Carr experience at quarterback, and sorely needed some protection for him after he was sacked 68 times in 2005. Enter Evans, who has earned five First-team All-Pro selections during his career with the New Orleans Saints and started for the team during its Super Bowl-winning season in 2009.

#2. DT Haloti Ngata
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: New Orleans Saints
Original No. 2 pick: Reggie Bush
Original slot for Ngata: First round, No. 12 overall
Bush was the no-brainer pick for the Saints after his magical college career, but he was far from being the second-best player in this draft. Based on Approximate Value, that honor goes to Ngata, who was a mainstay for the Baltimore Ravens for nine seasons before being traded to the Detroit Lions. Ngata has made five Pro Bowls and has five All-Pro selections.
4
#3. QB Jay Cutler
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Tennessee Titans
Original No. 3 pick: Vince Young
Original slot for Cutler: First round, No. 11 overall
Neither the Texans nor Saints were in a position to pick a quarterback this high in the draft, making Cutler the ideal fit for the Titans. Cutler spent his college career at Vanderbilt -- also located in Nashville -- and would have been a massive upgrade for the franchise over Young. Though he's largely been a disappointment in Denver and Chicago, perhaps he could have flourished in a different, more welcoming environment.
5
#4. WR Brandon Marshall
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: New York Jets
Original No. 4 pick: D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Original slot for Marshall: Fourth round, No. 119 overall
The Jets' leading receiver in 2005 was veteran wideout Laveranues Coles, and Marshall would have slotted in nicely alongside him before eventually taking over as the team's go-to guy. Marshall is a Jet now, but the franchise would have benefited from his services a lot sooner if they'd drafted him here.
6
#5. DE Tamba Hali
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Green Bay Packers
Original No. 5 pick: A.J. Hawk
Original slot for Hali: First round, No. 20 overall
Hawk became a lynchpin for the Packers defense when the team eventually won the Super Bowl, so they're not too upset at their original pick. Still, Hali has had the better career, and Green Bay's pass rush would have been even better if it had the five-time Pro Bowler in tow.
7
#6. OT Andrew Whitworth
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: San Francisco 49ers
Original No. 6 pick: Vernon Davis
Original slot for Whitworth: Second round, No. 55 overall
Whitworth, a three-time First-team All-Pro selection, has been a staple at left tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals. The 49ers would have loved that type of protection for quarterback Alex Smith, who was taken first overall by San Francisco in the 2005 draft.
8
#7. RB Maurice Jones-Drew
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Oakland Raiders
Original No. 7 pick: Michael Huff
Original slot for Jones-Drew: Second round, No. 60 overall
The Raiders needed help all over their roster heading into the 2006 draft, and though they ranked 27th in total defense, Jones-Drew would have been the best pick here. The team's leading running back in 2006 was Justin Farags, and Jones-Drew would clearly have been an upgrade.
9
#8. DE Mario Williams
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Buffalo Bills
Original No. 8 pick: Donte Whitner
Original slot for Williams: First round, No. 1 overall
Williams spent four seasons with the Bills from 2012 to 2015, but had he been on the board at No. 8, Buffalo would have loved to draft him. Now with the Miami Dolphins, Williams has made four All-Pro teams in his career.
10
#9. WR Marques Colston
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Detroit Lions
Original No. 9 pick: Ernie Sims
Original slot for Colston: Seventh round, No. 252 overall
From 2003 to 2005, the Lions used their first pick on a wide receiver: Charles Rodgers (No. 2 in 2003), Roy Williams (No. 7 in 2004) and Mike Williams (No. 10 in 2005), all of whom were disappointments. Despite their bad luck receivers, the smart choice here would have been Colston, who posted six 1,000-yard seasons with the Saints during his career.
11
#10. C Nick Mangold
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Arizona Cardinals
Original No. 10 pick: Matt Leinart
Original slot for Mangold: First round, No. 29 overall
Mangold has made seven Pro Bowls during his career as the anchor of the Jets' offensive line. The Cardinals thought Leinart would be their quarterback of the future, but it was veteran Kurt Warner who led the team to the Super Bowl in 2008.
12
#11. WR Greg Jennings
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Denver Broncos
Original No. 11 pick: Jay Cutler
Original slot for Jennings: Second round, No. 52 overall
The Broncos found their go-to wide receiver in Brandon Marshall, who was taken in the fourth round. But with Marshall and Cutler off the board here, Jennings is their best option. He blossomed into the primary wideout for the Packers, making two Pro Bowl appearances.
13
#12. DE Elvis Dumervil
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Baltimore Ravens
Original No. 12 pick: Haloti Ngata
Original slot for Dumervil: Fourth round, No. 126 overall
Ngata was a key leader for the Ravens defense during his time in Baltimore, but Dumervil would have been a good fit as well. More of a pass rusher than a run stopper, Dumervil actually signed with the Ravens prior to the 2013 season and has made five Pro Bowls in his career.
14
#13. DT Kyle Williams
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Cleveland Browns
Original No. 13 pick: Kamerion Wimbley
Original slot for Williams: Fifth round, No. 134 overall
Williams has spent his entire career with the Bills, going from a fifth-round pick to a four-time Pro Bowler. The Bills needed plenty of help on the defensive line, and Williams would have been a better pick than defensive end Kamerion Wimbley, who lasted nine seasons and played for three teams.
15
#14. LB Chad Greenway
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Philadelphia Eagles
Original No. 14 pick: Brodrick Bunkley
Original slot for Greenway: First round, No. 17 overall
Greenway has had six seasons with 100 or more combined tackles as a member of the Minnesota Vikings. The Eagles' linebacking corps was anchored by an aging Jeremiah Trotter in 2006, and the team would have loved to have Greenway in to replace him in the middle of the defense.
16
#15. CB Antonio Cromartie
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: St. Louis Rams
Original No. 15 pick: Tye Hill
Original slot for Cromartie: First round, No. 19 overall
The Rams went with a cornerback in 2006, but they chose the wrong one. Cromartie has been the best defensive back from this draft class, according to Approximate Value, and has made four Pro Bowl appearances.
17
#16. LB D'Qwell Jackson
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Miami Dolphins
Original No. 16 pick: Jason Allen
Original slot for Jackson: Second round, No. 34 overall
Middle linebacker Zach Thomas was nearing the end of his impressive career by the end of the 2005 season. Jackson, who ended up anchoring the Cleveland Browns' defense for eight seasons, would have been an excellent replacement for Thomas, who left the Dolphins after the 2007 season.
18
#17. RB Reggie Bush
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Minnesota Vikings
Original No. 17 pick: Chad Greenway
Original slot for Bush: First round, No. 2 overall
Bush's career may not have ever reached superstardom like it seemed destined to in college, but he became a serviceable player in the past decade. He was a key member of the Saints' Super Bowl-winning team in 2009, and has two 1,000-yard rushing seasons to his name (2011 and 2013).
19
#18. LB A.J. Hawk
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Dallas Cowboys
Original No. 18 pick: Bobby Carpenter
Original slot for Hawk: First round, No. 5 overall
Hawk was a dependable player for the Packers and anchored their defense during the team's 2010 championship season. The Cowboys chose Hawk's college teammate Carpenter in this slot, but the latter ended up being a major disappointment.
20
#19. CB Johnathan Joseph
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: San Diego Chargers
Original No. 19 pick: Antonio Cromartie
Original slot for Joseph: First round, No. 24 overall
The Chargers were desperate for secondary help after finishing 28th in passing defense in 2005. Cromartie ended up being a great pick, but since he's off the board, Joseph is the next-best option. Joseph has made two Pro Bowls in his career and was a Second-team All-Pro selection in 2011.
21
#20. LB DeMeco Ryans
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Kansas City Chiefs
Original No. 20 pick: Tamba Hali
Original slot for Ryans: Second round, No. 33 overall
The Chiefs had the league's best offense in 2005 and rightfully targeted defense with their first pick in the 2006 draft. Hali was an excellent choice, but in our re-draft, Ryans would be a great fit as well. Ryans was named the 2006 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and was a Pro Bowl selection in 2007 and 2009.
22
#21. RB DeAngelo Williams
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: New England Patriots
Original No. 21 pick: Laurence Maroney
Original slot for Williams: First round, No. 27 overall
Maroney was a serviceable player for the Patriots, but he lacked the longevity that Williams is still displaying more than 10 years into his professional career. Williams' best season came in 2008, when he rushed for 1,515 yards and 18 touchdowns. New England always seems to find a quality running back, but it's likely Williams would have been a fixture alongside Tom Brady during the current Patriots dynasty.
23
#22. DT Domata Peko
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: San Francisco 49ers
Original No. 22 pick: Manny Lawson
Original slot for Peko: Fourth round, No. 123 overall
With their second pick in the first round, the Niners needed help on their defensive line. Lawson has been a solid player during his NFL career, but Peko would have been the better pick. The fourth-round pick has spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Bengals and has a career Approximate Value of 56, the second-highest among defensive tackles from this draft.
24
#23. OT Daryn Colledge
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Original No. 23 pick: Davin Joseph
Original slot for Colledge: Second round, No. 47 overall
With the league's best defense from a season ago, Tampa Bay looked to shore up its offensive line. Joseph had a fine career, but Colledge would have been the better choice. He spent the better part of his career as a starter for the Packers, and he played in every game during the team's championship 2010 season.
25
#24. S Antoine Bethea
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Cincinnati Bengals
Original No. 24 pick: Johnathan Joseph
Original slot for Bethea: Sixth round, No. 207 overall
The Bengals got a good boost to their secondary with Joseph, but since he's unavailable here, Bethea would be a great fit. Bethea has made three Pro Bowls during his career and was a part of the Indianapolis Colts' Super Bowl-winning team in 2006.
26
#25. WR Santonio Holmes
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Original No. 25 pick: Santonio Holmes
Original slot for Holmes: First round, No. 25 overall
It took 25 picks, but we finally have our first (and only) untouched pick. There are several players with a higher Approximate Value than Holmes that are still available, but the Steelers needed to infuse some youth to their receiving corps, and Holmes is the best player available. Considering his heroics in Super Bowl XLIII, Steelers fans likely wouldn't change this pick with the benefit of hindsight.
27
#26. OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Buffalo Bills
Original No. 26 pick: John McCargo
Original slot for Ferguson: First round, No. 4 overall
Ferguson spent his entire 10-year career with the Jets, making three Pro Bowls during that time. He was certainly not a bust by any means, but there are three offensive tackles with higher Approximate Value totals than him, which was a key factor in his fall from No. 4 to No. 26.
28
#27. RB Joseph Addai
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Carolina Panthers
Original No. 27 pick: DeAngelo Williams
Original slot for Addai: First round, No. 30 overall
With Williams off the board, Addai is the best available running back for the Panthers in this slot. Addai was a productive player for the Colts but lasted only six seasons. He had two 1,000-yard rushing seasons and made the Pro Bowl in 2007.
29
#28. TE Vernon Davis
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Jacksonville Jaguars
Original No. 28 pick: Marcedes Lewis
Original slot for Davis: First round, No. 6 overall
The Jaguars were desperate for offensive skill players, and with few viable choices left at wide receiver (the player with the highest career Approximate Value in our re-draft is Jason Avant), Davis is the best pass-catching option left. Davis made two Pro Bowls during his career with San Francisco and has been better than Lewis.
30
#29. OT Charlie Johnson
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: New York Jets
Original No. 29 pick: Nick Mangold
Original slot for Johnson: Sixth round, No. 199 overall
Mangold was an excellent pick for the Jets, and with him unavailable, the next-best offensive lineman still on the board is Johnson. He lasted nine seasons in the league, spending most of his time as a starter, an impressive feat for a sixth round pick.
31
#30. CB Cortland Finnegan
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Indianapolis Colts
Original No. 30 pick: Joseph Addai
Original slot for Finnegan: Seventh round, No. 215 overall
The Colts drafted a cornerback (Tim Jennings) with their second-round pick, but with Addai unavailable, they'll take a better one in the first round in Finnegan. As a seventh-round pick, Finnegan was a First-team All-Pro selection in 2008 and would have been a good fit alongside hard-hitting safety Bob Sanders in the Colts' secondary.
32
#31. S Donte Whitner
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: Seattle Seahawks
Original No. 31 pick: Kelly Jennings
Original slot for Whitner: First round, No. 8 overall
Looking to address their secondary, the Seahawks took cornerback Kelly Jennings in this slot. Jennings lasted only six seasons, and Whitner, who made the Pro Bowl each season from 2012 to 2014, would have been a better choice.
33
#32. DE Rob Ninkovich
- Updated Sep 29, 2016

Team: New York Giants
Original No. 32 pick: Mathias Kiwanuka
Original slot for Ninkovich: Fifth round, No. 135 overall
Kiwanuka was a useful player for the Giants' fearsome pass rush, but Ninkovich has been a superior player. Kiwanuka's Approximate Value (37) is lower than Ninkovich's (48), and Ninkovich holds a 42-38.5 lead in career sacks.

#20. LB DeMeco Ryans

#21. RB DeAngelo Williams

#22. DT Domata Peko

#23. OT Daryn Colledge

#24. S Antoine Bethea

#25. WR Santonio Holmes

#26. OT D'Brickashaw Ferguson

4 to No. 26.
#27. RB Joseph Addai

#28. TE Vernon Davis

#29. OT Charlie Johnson

#30. CB Cortland Finnegan

#31. S Donte Whitner

#32. DE Rob Ninkovich
