Previewing the finals

All at Devaney Sports Center

Class A: No. 1 Bellevue West (27-1) vs. No. 5 Lincoln Southeast (23-3), 1 p.m. – Bellevue West had the better regular season; preseason No. 1 Southeast has been more impressive at the state tournament. Whoever controls the tempo will win this one.

Class B: No. 4 Norris (19-6) vs. No. 2 Northwest (24-3), 6:30 p.m. – As much parity as there’s been in Class B, it’s only fitting both wild-card teams reached the finals. With McKenzie Brown, Northwest might have an edge on the perimeter, but Norris’ Kasey Hohlen and Bridget Bucher will make life difficult inside on the Vikings.

Class C-1: No. 1 Kearney Catholic (26-2) vs. No. 2 Pierce (22-4), 4:30 p.m. – Both teams have tall players who are capable of playing both inside and outside. Pierce beat the Stars in January the night after Seward handed Kearney Catholic its first loss. We’ll find out if fatigue was really a factor then.

Class C-2: No. 1 Crofton (26-0) vs. No. 2 Hastings St. Cecilia (23-4), 9 a.m. – These have been the top two teams in the ratings all year. Crofton all-stater Bridget Arens will be tough matchup inside for St. Cecilia, but a schedule that included Kearney Catholic and Northwest has prepared the Hawkettes for this moment.

Class D-1: No. 2 Pender (24-3) vs. No. 6 St. Mary’s (24-2), 8:30 p.m. – St. Mary’s knocked off top-ranked and defending champion Guardian Angels Central Catholic in the semifinals to spoil an all wild-card championship game. Both teams had balanced scoring Friday, so it should be a great matchup of northern Nebraska teams.

Class D-2: No. 6 Osmond (19-2) vs. No. 2 Wynot (24-4), 11 a.m. – Osmond downed the Blue Devils in the district finals. But this is a state final and Wynot is the two-time defending champion. The teams are 1-1 head-to-head this season.
