Kearney Catholic and Bishop Neumann are both one win away from a showdown in the Class C state softball championship game.
The Stars and Cavaliers remained unbeaten in the winner’s bracket with second-round victories at the Smith Softball Complex.
Perri Tidwell scattered seven hits and struck out four to lead Kearney Catholic to a 12-4, 6-inning victory over defending champion Hastings St. Cecilia. Pfeiffer Adkisson led the Stars offense with three hits, a total that included two doubles. Adkisson also was credited with five RBIs and scored two runs.
Kynlee Ruyle, Jersey DeVall and Marin O’Connor had two hits apiece for Kearney Catholic as the Stars finished with 11 total hits. Their defense also was solid, as the Stars were only charged with one error.
The Neumann-Ashland game had a bit more drama as the Bluejays led 2-1 after five innings. In the top Aubrey of the sixth, Marissa Knust led off with a walk and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Aubrey Fujan. Winning pitcher Isabelle Stuhr then laced a line drive single to right field to score Knust and tie the game 2-2.
Three singles and a Bluejays error led to the three runs that allowed the Cavaliers to earn their second win of the season over the Bluejays.
Centura/Central Valley and Douglas County West were the first two teams eliminated from the tournament. Fort Calhoun defeated CCV 15-7 while Yutan/Mead edged the Falcons 2-1.
