Hitting the right note: Meet the 2021 first-team softball Super-Staters

𝙈𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙙

The Journal Star's first-team softball Super-Staters team poses for a team portrait while sitting at a piano Thursday at Rainbow Recording Studio in Omaha.

𝙍𝙪𝙗𝙮 𝙈𝙚𝙮𝙡𝙖𝙣, 𝙋, 𝙊𝙢𝙖𝙝𝙖 𝙎𝙠𝙪𝙩𝙩

Year: Senior | College: Washington

Walk-up song: "Run This Town," By Eminem and Rihanna.

Season in a song title: "#Tru2t." "It (trust) was really all of us coming together for a common goal and trying to put aside everything else outside of softball and when we're together, be together and in the moment."

Pitches and lyrics: Meylan produced one of the top seasons in state history. She overpowered hitters all fall, striking out 180 in 86 innings while finishing with a 0.41 ERA. She allowed only five earned runs. At the plate, Meylan was a force, hitting .537 with 18 homers, 44 RBIs and 37 runs scored.

Album review: "She's one of the strongest kids I ever coached, and (earlier in high school) she just threw for all she was worth, just threw it hard. And now she's a pitcher. She was a hard thrower then and now she's a pitcher." — Skutt coach Keith Engelkamp.

𝙈𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙖 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙛, 𝙋, 𝙊𝙢𝙖𝙝𝙖 𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣

Year: Junior | College: Southern Illinois

Walk-up song: "International Harvester," by Craig Morgan.

Season in a song title: "Party at the Picnic Table." "There is a picnic table by our home field that is like our team's spot."

Pitches and lyrics: Groff was hitting the right notes and spots this year in the circle. She struck out 255 batters, bumping her career total to 715 Ks. She only walked 31 batters and was at her best against some of the state's top teams, including a 19-strikeout performance against Omaha Skutt. She was 18-5 with a 1.80 earned-run average.

Album review: "The thing that stood out the most was how she was able to generate 255 strikeouts. Last year the teams had not seen her as much and didn’t know as much about her. This year every team knew much more about her and prepared hard, and she was still able to average almost two strikeouts per inning." — Omaha Marian coach Chad Perkins.

𝙏𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙢 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙤, 𝙋, 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚

Year: Junior | College: Omaha

Walk-up song: "The Show Goes On," by Lupe Fiasco.

Season in a song title: "You're Going to Miss This." "It went by really fast, seniors are leaving, and they were big in our season."

Pitches and lyrics: If you're looking for a great bandleader, look no further than Montelongo, whose pitching had North Platte in a position to win most of its games. She was 21-6 with a 1.55 ERA and struck out 242. She struck out 17 against Lincoln East and 18 against Kearney, and also was one of the top bats in the Bulldogs' lineup (.348 with eight homers and eight doubles).

Album review: "She had good overall season stats, but some great individual outings, too. It seemed that our team had some very close games this year, and several games that went extra innings — usually more than one extra inning. Tatum had some of her best outings pitching complete extra-inning games versus Skutt, Lincoln East, and Northwest." — North Platte coach Jeff Barner.

EAKIN HOWARD, Journal Star

𝙈𝙖𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝘿𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙨, 𝘾, 𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙣 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙬𝙚𝙨𝙩

Year: Senior | College: Butler (Kan.) CC

Walk-up song: "Grove Street Party," by Waka Flocka Flame.

Season in a song title: "Dreams." "We kept on climbing and we never stopped."

Hits and lyrics: The back part of Divis' setlist was full of hits. She carried Southwest's offense at the state tournament, finishing 11-for-15 (.733) with 12 RBIs in four games, including a six-RBI performance in the final against Lincoln East. For the season, Divis hit .444 and drove in 51 runs.

Album review: "She started the season somewhat slow, but put in extra work and refocused, overcame minor injuries and got better and better throughout the year. She definitely saved her best for last. Her six RBIs in the state championship game were huge difference-makers." — Southwest coach Mark Watt.

𝙆𝙖𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙣 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙯, 𝙄𝙉𝙁, 𝙃𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨

Year: Senior | College: South Dakota State

Walk-up song: "Circle of Life," by Elton John

Season in a song title: "See You Again." "It's kind of more sad, but we all were really close and all us (seniors) are starting to leave the program and go off and do our own thing."

Hits and lyrics: Schultz hit an all-class state-record 65 career home runs, which shows just how powerful of a hitter she is (She once check-swung a homer over the fence), but there's much more to her game than that. She could hit to all parts of the field, and batted a school-record .596 as a senior. She also set a Class B state record for career RBIs (213). Her quickness and arm strength at third base was just as good.

Album review: "I think the thing that stood out the most were her offensive numbers. Early in the season, she was hitting around .850 and teams kept pitching to her. If she went 2-for-3 on the day, her average actually dropped. Her raw power got her on base a ton due to either extra-base hits or intentional walks. It really is a rare case to have a player like that" — Hastings coach Ashley Speak.

𝘼𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙞 𝙇𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙜, 𝙄𝙉𝙁, 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝

Year: Junior | College: Undecided

Walk-up song: "Back the Ass Up," by Juvenile.

Season in a song title: "Started from the Bottom." "We weren't even ranked at the beginning of the season and we made it all the way to state."

Hits and lyrics: Maybe no player in state history had a start to a season like Laing, who homered in each of her first seven games. She finished with 15 homers, 10 doubles, 54 runs scored and 39 RBIs. She was walked a school-record 41 times. Her defense at shortstop was just as good as her bat.

Album review: "Amari is the best pure athlete I've ever coached in 20 years — defensive plays and speed and range can't be described in words — as a hitter. The amount of respect opposing coaches had for her abilities says a lot more than I can — in one game she was intentionally walked with the bases loaded." — Millard South coach Steve Kerkman.

EAKIN HOWARD, Journal Star

𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙖𝙣 𝘼𝙙𝙖𝙢𝙨, 𝙄𝙉𝙁, 𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙣 𝙀𝙖𝙨𝙩

Year: Senior | College: Florida International

Walk-up song: "Livin' the Dream," by Morgan Wallen.

Season in a song title: "All I Want for Christmas is You." "We listen to Christmas music (before games) all the time. It helps us stay loose. When I think of East softball, honestly, I think of that song."

Hits and lyrics: Maybe no hitter meant more to her team this year than Adams, who hit .532 and smashed a Class A-record 24 home runs. A power hitter, Adams was asked to set the tone for the offense from atop the lineup card, and she did that and more, scoring more than 65 runs and driving in more than 60 runs. She was a key catalyst in East getting to the state final.

Album review: "She works on her swing continuously, and she knows when it feels good and when it does not feel right. She also puts an emphasis on more than hitting home runs, she works hard at her ability to pick balls at first base and increasing her range to snare balls. She is a hard worker, and a good student of the game as well." — East coach Lance Kingery.

EAKIN HOWARD, Journal Star

𝙃𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙖𝙝 𝘾𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙙, 𝙊𝙁/𝙋, 𝙊𝙢𝙖𝙝𝙖 𝙎𝙠𝙪𝙩𝙩

Year: Senior | College: Arkansas

Walk-up song: "Loud and Heavy," by Cody Jinks.

Season in a song title: "#Tru2t" "Just to trust each other and have each other's backs because you never what could go wrong."

Hits and lyrics: Like teammate Meylan, Camenzind was one of the most dynamic two-way players in state history. She reached base in her first 14 plate appearances of the season, had 13 homers in 14 games, and finished hitting .659 with 20 homers, 13 doubles, 66 RBIs and 60 runs scored. In the circle, she was 16-0 with 117 strikeouts in 84 innings with a 1.58 ERA. Her .591 career batting average is a Class B record and the second-best all-class mark.

𝘼𝙫𝙖 𝙍𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙝, 𝙊𝙁, 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙒𝙚𝙨𝙩

Year: Senior | College: Omaha

Walk-up song: "Center Field," by John Fogerty.

Season in a song title: "Stronger."

Hits and lyrics: She had the game-winning hit for Nebraska Gold in the Premier Girls Fastpitch national championship game last summer, and it carried over into the fall. Rongisch hit .505 with seven homers, 10 doubles and 37 RBIs while slugging .868. She struck out only four times and her speed and athleticism had her covering a lot of ground in the outfield. Rongisch has started every game in center field since her freshman year.

Album review: "Ability aside, that's a give ... what made Ava special is her ability to step up in pressure situations. She is best under pressure. You never knew where she was having a great game or a bad game. This separates her from the pack." — Millard West coach Don Brummer.

EAKIN HOWARD, Journal Star

𝙎𝙖𝙢𝙢𝙮 𝙎𝙘𝙝𝙢𝙞𝙙𝙩, 𝙊𝙁, 𝙃𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨

Year: Junior | College: Omaha

Walk-up song: The "Baby Shark" remix.

Season in a song title: "It's Fast." "Because the season goes by really fast."

Hits and lyrics: Schmidt showed great improvement in plate discipline and it led to a big season for the junior and the Tigers. She hit .539 with 12 homers, a school-record seven triples, 54 RBIs and 62 runs scored. She hit three two-run homers against Northwest in a state tournament game, and she made a smooth transition to center field.

Album review: "I think the thing that stood out the most about her season is the leadership role she took on in the outfield. Filling a big hole from last year, she took over center field and helped elevate the play of her fellow teammates in the outfield. She worked on improving her outfield technique and we found with her hard work, very few balls hit the ground this season in the outfield." — Hastings coach Ashley Speak.

EAKIN HOWARD, Journal Star

𝘼𝙨𝙝𝙡𝙚𝙮 𝙎𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧, 𝘿𝙋, 𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙣 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝𝙬𝙚𝙨𝙩

Year: Senior | College: Nebraska

Walk-up song: "Live Your Life," by Rihanna.

Season in a song title: "Rewind." "Just because it was such a good season and I'd want to live it again."

Hits and lyrics: The band member who can play every instrument? That's Smetter. She could hit for power (nine homers and 18 doubles), hit to all parts of the field and bunt her way on (.493 batting average), and was one of Class A's top running threats (27 stolen bases). She also gave the state champion Silver Hawks a lockdown glove at second base.

Album review: "Her work ethic, focus and confidence carried over to her teammates all year. She is an exceptional leadoff hitter, with power and discipline (32 walks) an excellent defensive second baseman (great range and only two errors on the season) and a role model on and off the field." — Southwest coach Mark Watt.

EAKIN HOWARD, Journal Star

𝙆𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙅𝙤𝙝𝙣𝙨𝙤𝙣, 𝘿𝙋, 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙉𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝

Year: Junior | College: Southern Illinois

Walk-up song: "Legend," by The Score.

Season in a song title: "Believe." "That was kind of our motto this year that we used."

Hits and lyrics: Johnson became one of the most dangerous hitters in the state as a junior, belting a school-record 20 home runs, including four in the state tournament. She hit .422 and drove in 54 runs while scoring 42 runs. Her slugging percentage was a whopping 1.229, and she set numerous school offensive records.

Album review: "Katherine is a natural leader along with being one of the hardest workers and a great team culture kid always keeping everyone going in the same direction. Katherine is one of the best hitters with pure power I have been around." — Millard North coach Travis Unzicker.

EAKIN HOWARD, Journal Star

𝙏𝙖𝙮𝙡𝙤𝙧 𝙎𝙚𝙙𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙠, 𝘿𝙋, 𝘽𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙤𝙣

Year: Senior | College: Wichita State

Walk-on song: "Yes Indeed," by Lil Baby and Drake.

Season in a song title: "Best for Last." "Because our best season was my senior year, so that was pretty fun. We went to state."

Hits and lyrics: Very few players match Sedlacek when it comes to having the total package — hitting, defense, running. She hit .452 and finished with 42 hits, 11 homers, 19 stolen bases. Also a standout basketball player, Sedlacek had a .580 on-base percentage, and she showed great range from her shortstop position while helping Bennington reach the state tournament.

Album review: "Taylor found multiple ways to be an impact player for us this year. Whether it was with her bat, glove, or the pressure she put on teams running the bases, she consistently made plays happen. Her work ethic and drive to be highly successful is second to none and it translated into having a tremendous season." — Bennington coach Landon Blanchard.

EAKIN HOWARD, Journal Star

𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙈𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨, 𝘿𝙋, 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙣𝙖

Year: Junior | College: Undecided

Walk-up song: "Center Field" by John Fogerty.

Season in a song title: "Leave the Night On." "Our team loves that song. We have been listening to that song since 2014 and we just love it. It's just about we wish it could last forever."

Hits and lyrics: With players like Mills in the middle of the lineup, the Dragons had a big turnaround and won the Metro Conference Tournament. The junior hit .418 with 10 homers and a school-record 43 RBIs while slugging .816. She committed just one error at third base, and played the entire season with an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.

Album review: "Faith played the entire season with a significant arm injury, requiring surgery as soon as (the) season was over. The grit and determination it took to get through something like that is impossible to measure." — Gretna coach Bill Heard.

EAKIN HOWARD, Journal Star

𝙀𝙢𝙢𝙞𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨, 𝘿𝙋, 𝙋𝙖𝙥𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙤𝙣-𝙇𝙖 𝙑𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖

Year: Junior | College: Undecided

Walk-up song: "DNA," by Kendrick Lamar.

Season in a song title: "Proved Them Wrong." "The whole season everybody but our team was doubting us a lot because of all the seniors, they left. I think this year we proved we're still the same team, we have the same expectations."

Hits and lyrics: Hitting .535 in Class A is no small feat. Hitting .535 against a schedule that included 23 games against rated foes puts you in a class of your own. That's was Wills did from atop the Monarch lineup. She had six doubles, four homers, scored 40 runs and stole 10 bases. At state, Wills was 12-for-18. She also was at the top of her game at center field.

Album review: "She was a consistent performer for us all year and probably what stood out was the few games she had to sit because of injury. It really hurt our offense and defense. The other thing that stood out was the great state tournament she had." — Papio coach Todd Petersen.

EAKIN HOWARD Journal Star

𝙇𝙖𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙣 𝘾𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙙, 𝙄𝙉𝙁, 𝙊𝙢𝙖𝙝𝙖 𝙎𝙠𝙪𝙩𝙩

Year: Senior | College: Arkansas

Walk-up song: "Get Low," by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz.

Season in a song title: "#Tru2t" "We needed to trust each other that we could have the season that we all dreamed up, and the '2' stands for winning (state) again."

Hits and lyrics: Camenzind had her best season as a SkyHawk, hitting .495 (up from .410 from last year), with 15 homers, 11 doubles and 38 RBIs. The leadoff hitter also drew a team-high 24 walks and was a big table-setter for her twin sister Hannah, who batted second, and Meylan, who batted third. Camenzind, who was a catcher before she got to high school, also is an elite glove at shortstop.

Album review: "I've never seen somebody play with hands like that except maybe several years ago when Amanda Lehotak from Gross played shortstop. (Lauren) came to us as a catcher. I said, 'I get it with the catcher, but if we can find somebody else to catch, those hands and those feet have to be on the field.'" — Skutt coach Keith Engelkamp.
