Simpson wins all-around before hometown crowd

Richelle Simpson performs on the balance beam during the 2003 NCAA Super Six Finals at the Devaney Sports Center in April 2003. Simpson won the all-around title, joining Heather Brink (2000) as the only two Huskers to win that crown. Simpson also won the floor exercise, while Brink won the vault in her championship year. Michelle Bryant was Nebraska's first women's champion in 1990, winning on the vault. The Huskers finished fourth in 2003, matching their best efforts from 2000 and 2011. Nebraska also hosted the championship meet in 2009.

Hardabura won the all-around and floor exercise titles, two of the 42 individual crowns won by Huskers. As a team, Nebraska has won eight titles, the last in 1994. Nebraska hosted the championships 10 times between 1980 and 1999.

Memorial Stadium hosts 1959 NCAA track championships

Lincoln was the site for the NCAA track championships in 1942, won by USC, and 1959, won by Kansas. This page from the June 14, 1959, Sunday Journal and Star tells how the Jayhawks cruised to the team title and how Oklahoma State pole vaulter Jim Graham tried to clear 15 feet, 4½ inches after dark with the help of a floodlight rushed into Memorial Stadium by the Lincoln Fire and Police departments.

Myerscough of Hambleton, England, won the event, one of his four national championships (two indoor, two outdoor) in the shot put to go with eight Big 12 titles for the seven-time All-American. The Huskers finished third at the 2003 indoor meet, their best finish since 2000. Their best outdoor finish in that time was also in 2003, when they placed fifth.

Shocking the Bears

Kiera Hardy celebrates after the Huskers defeated Baylor 103-99 in triple overtime on Jan. 12, 2005, at the Devaney Sports Center. Hardy scored a career-high 37 points against the second-ranked Bears in Nebraska's first win over a top-five opponent. Baylor went 20-1 after that loss en route to its first NCAA title by a women's team. The Huskers ended the season 18-14, losing their last four regular-season games and falling to Iowa 71-67 in the second round of the WNIT.

Nebraska defenders Chris Balham (32), Cookie Miller (24) and Paul Velander (25) can't stop Sherron Collins of Kansas from taking his shot during the Big 12 opener for both teams on Jan. 12, 2008, at the Devaney Sports Center. The Huskers had won six straight before the No. 3 Jayhawks rolled to a 79-58 victory. Kansas also defeated Nebraska at home and in the Big 12 Tournament on its way to its fifth national title. The Huskers finished 20-13 and lost at Mississippi in overtime in the second round of the NIT.

Husker heartbreak at the CWS

Nebraska's Brian Duensing (from left), Zach Kroenke and Joba Chamberlain celebrate Andy Gerch's go-ahead home run in the ninth inning against Arizona State at the 2005 College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium. Gerch's homer put the Huskers up 7-5 in the elimination game, but the Wildcats managed to tie it in the bottom of the ninth before winning it in the 11th. It's the last time Nebraska has reached the CWS.

Beavers celebrate in Omaha

Oregon State pitcher Kevin Abel (23) holds the national championship trophy after the final out of a 5-0 win over Arkansas on June 28, 2018, in the decisive third game of the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park. Abel threw a complete game two-hitter in the national championship win. The Huskers played the Beavers twice early in the season at the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge in Surprise, Ariz., losing 9-1 and 10-3.

A measure of revenge against the Aggies

Nebraska's Jordan Hooper (35) drives around Texas A&M's Courtney Walker during a second-round game of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in College Station, Texas. The Huskers won 74-63 two years after losing to the Aggies 84-49 in Nebraska's last regular-season game in the Big 12 Conference. Texas A&M went on to win the 2011 NCAA championship with a 33-5 record, and Nebraska jumped to the Big Ten later that year.

UConn continues tourney roll at PBA

The Huskies have a little fun with their NCAA Lincoln Regional championship trophy after defeating Texas A&M 69-54 at Pinnacle Bank Arena on March 31, 2014. Top-ranked UConn also beat BYU 70-51 in the Sweet Sixteen in Lincoln as part of a 40-0 march to its ninth championship.

The top-ranked Huskies won 84-41, and would finish 38-0 while winning their fourth straight title. Shepard earned a measure of revenge in 2018 after transferring to Notre Dame, getting a double-double in Notre Dame's 91-89 victory over the Huskies in a national semifinal. Shepard then scored a team-high 19 points and Arike Ogunbowale hit a three-pointer with 0.1 left for a 61-58 win over Mississippi State in the national championship game.

Nebraska bowlers Liz Kuhlkin (left) and Julia Bond share a laugh at news conference at Memorial Stadium on April 13, 2015, after the Huskers won the NCAA championship two days earlier 4-2 over Stephen F. Huskers fall short of softball title in Omaha

The runner-up trophy isn't quite enough for Nebraska's Ginger Cannon after the Huskers lost 2-1 in nine innings to UCLA in the championship of the 1985 Women's College World Series in Omaha. Cannon had a tournament-high five RBIs to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Nebraska's participation in the WCWS was later vacated by the NCAA after ruling NU had used two ineligible players. Omaha was the home of the WCWS for its first six seasons it was sanctioned by the NCAA from 1982-87. It then spent two years in Sunnyvale, Calif., before settling in Oklahoma City.
