The Millard North graduate became NU's third Heisman Trophy winner, earning the 2001 honor. He also was Walter Camp Player of the Year, Davey O'Brien Quarterback Award winner, and an All-American. Turner Gill, who took over as starter during the 1981 season, led one of the most explosive offensive attacks in college football history, as NU averaged 546.7 yards of total offense and 52.0 points per game in 1983. He led the Huskers to a 28-2 mark, including a 20-0 league record, and three conference titles during his career.
