Three meaningful contenders and then everybody else in latest Big Ten power rankings

1. MICHIGAN (9-1, 7-0)

Previous: 1. Last week: W 42-7 at Rutgers.

The Wolverines kept rolling. They surrendered an 80-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter but only 172 yards besides that play. Quarterback Shea Patterson is playing great football, Michigan has Tarik Black back at receiver, the run game is strong and the defense is as good as ever. This team is a force. Indiana and The Game left on the schedule.

2. OHIO STATE (9-1, 6-1)

Sept. 28 / TBA / Memorial Stadium / TBA

First-half thoughts: Make no mistake, Urban Meyer left the cupboard stocked for new head coach Ryan Day. J.K. Dobbins is primed to be the go-to running back in the wake of Mike Weber's departure. Dobbins rushed 23 times for 163 yards and three TDs against Nebraska last season. The Buckeyes lost three of their top four receivers from last season, but the wideout crew is still loaded, led by the fleet K.J. Hill. Speaking of loaded, OSU should be better on defense, led by a front four with ample NFL talent. The offensive skill talent and defensive strength across the board should take plenty of pressure off new starting quarterback Justin Fields, who replaces first-round draft pick Dwayne Haskins. All Haskins did was throw for 50 touchdowns last season.

Second-half prediction: This game will test Nebraska like no other on the schedule. If the Huskers enter the contest undefeated, Memorial Stadium will be up for grabs. Of course, Ohio State is used to these type of scenes. But how well will Fields react? The guess here is Nebraska can get just enough done on offense to pull the upset. The Huskers were close to beating the Buckeyes last season at the Horseshoe, which should give the home team plenty of confidence and motivation.

The Buckeyes’ defense shut down the Spartans on the road. For all of OSU’s problems this fall, the program is going to host Michigan for the East division title and a spot in the Big Ten title game. Urban Meyer’s team will probably be a home underdog to the Wolverines, but they’ll get their chance.

3. NORTHWESTERN (6-4, 6-1)

How about the Wildcats? They go on the road and beat Iowa, wrapping up the West division with a bit of help from Wisconsin and Purdue and two weeks to spare. Northwestern’s won 13 of its past 14 Big Ten games. Say what you want about Pat Fitzgerald’s team, but they’ll be in Indy.

4. PENN STATE (7-3, 4-3)

Previous: 7. Last week: W 22-10 vs. Wisconsin.

A disappointing fall in Madison continued with a listless loss in State College. Backup quarterback Jack Coan has not shown the ability to move the offense consistently and it’s unclear whether Alex Hornibrook (concussion) will be able to return this week.

7. PURDUE (5-5, 4-3)

10. NEBRASKA (3-7, 2-5)

The Huskers made it three wins in four weeks by hanging 606 yards on Illinois. If they can finish with wins against Michigan State and Iowa, they’ll feel very good about the second half of the season. That’s no easy task, but both teams look more beatable than they did a month ago.

11. INDIANA (5-5, 2-5)

The Hoosiers got a good win against Maryland and now need just one more for bowl eligibility. They travel to Michigan this weekend then host Purdue. Last week’s win snapped a four-game skid.

12. MINNESOTA (5-5, 2-5)

Previous: 13. Last week: W 41-10 vs. Purdue.

The Illini have one of the Big Ten’s best rushing attacks but not much else. Senior quarterback AJ Bush kept them in the game against NU for a while. Lovie Smith doesn’t think Reggie Corbin’s injury is serious, which is a big break for Illinois.

14. RUTGERS (1-9, 0-7)

The Scarlet Knights have only a home game against Penn State and a road trip to East Lansing left to try to avoid a winless Big Ten season. Chris Ash’s team has lost nine straight since a season-opening win against Texas State.
