The indispensible Huskers in 2015

Call them the un-Expendables. Here's a look at the Huskers the team can least afford to lose in 2015.
The indispensable Huskers
When you think about wins and losses for Nebraska football in 2015, and what it would take for the Huskers to duck their heads under that four-loss bar, to rule the West, all that glory, you also think of health.
Who could this football team least afford to lose?

16. Ryne Reeves
Injuries have plagued the senior center his whole career, and his recovery from a knee injury suffered against Iowa kept him out of spring practice.
As Reeves edged closer to being full-strength, Mike Riley acknowledged at the end of spring ball that center was one of two positions that concerned him the most in regard to depth. Paul Thurston will be in the competition come fall, and there are other options the Huskers could throw into the position.

15. Daniel Davie
His spring was shortened by injury and Nebraska isn’t without talent at his position. In fact, he’ll have to fight off some younger players to lock down the starting cornerback job in the fall.
But he’s been out there before in the big moments others haven’t experienced. That is significant, even at a position with depth. One of the things to like the most about Davie was that, even after he injured his ankle this spring, he stayed engaged, often standing on the edge of the sideline shouting praise or critiques at his peers.
14. Cethan Carter
When it comes to tight end, the Huskers may have more in the cupboard than some believe. Riley has said he’s been pleasantly surprised by the personnel there.
In addition to Carter, there’s Sam Cotton, David Sutton, Trey Foster and Luke McNitt, as well as summer arrival Matt Snyder. But Carter, who had six of his 16 career catches in the last four games last season, is the presumed leader of the pack.

13. Byerson Cockrell
As versatile as anybody in the secondary, the departure of LeRoy Alexander has it looking like a wise move that Husker coaches worked Cockrell at safety all spring.
He could also play nickel back for the Huskers, which he did all of last season until injuries forced him to make an emergency start at safety vs. Iowa. With little prep at the position, he more than held his own. That’s a guy with a lot of value.
12. Jordan Westerkamp
Someone who would be higher on this list if not for the belief wide receiver has more depth than other positions. His 747 receiving yards as a sophomore were just 6 yards from making NU's single-season top 10.
He’s clearly earned the respect of his teammates, who voted him one of six team captains. Taking him away from this offense would be taking away one of its most dynamic options — and its best pair of hands.
11. Jack Gangwish
Depth at defensive end remains a concern. Redshirt freshman Freedom Akinmoladun emerged as a likely No. 3 at spring’s end, and the Huskers could potentially call on twins Carlos and Khalil Davis for reserve help if older players don’t emerge in fall camp.
But … none of those players have taken any game snaps like Gangwish.

10. Sam Foltz
Yeah, there’s a punter on this list. What of it?
Because, after watching Foltz boom rockets all spring, the junior from Grand Island seems as if he could be of incredible value to the field-position game. Referring to him a couple of times as “Sam the Punter,” Riley has quickly made it clear he’s a big fan of Foltz’s big leg.
9. Vincent Valentine
With 17 starts already, Valentine and Maliek Collins proved a dominating D-tackle duo during the spring.
There’s no thinking they won’t be able to have a similar impact in the fall. If this were just a “best players” list, Valentine would be higher. But NU does have some depth on the interior, notably from Kevin Williams, who had a really strong spring after coming back last fall from two separate ACL injuries.
8. Alex Lewis
He plays the all-important left tackle spot. He's a team captain. The one guy on the O-line that seems to have a firm hold on the job heading into fall camp.
Lewis is a passionate player who at the moment is also Nebraska's best talent up front. This season won't be just about his play, but also how he leads younger guys around him.
7. Michael Rose-Ivey
A torn ACL robbed him of his 2014 season. But his return this spring was necessary for a linebacker group that is ultra-thin.
Basically, Rose-Ivey and Josh Banderas are the only players with any significant experience at the position. If you're a linebacker who has played college football before, your value to this team is incredibly high right now.
6. Nate Gerry
There is some depth at safety, but nobody in that group has played it as well, or in as many games, as Gerry.
You're talking about a player with first-team all-conference potential. Yes, young players such as Kieron Williams and Aaron Williams can make Husker fans feel good about the future.

5. De'Mornay Pierson-El
When perusing Athlon Sports’ preseason All-Big Ten selections, you may have noticed Pierson-El was listed as a first-teamer as both an all-purpose player on offense and a returner on special teams.
That’s a big bang for someone who at this time a year ago was just arriving on campus. While it’s all just offseason flattery for now, Pierson-El seems tailor-made for this offense. While honing his game as a receiver, he also could also emerge as a weapon in the rushing game, if Riley and offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf use him with the jet sweep as much as some think.

4. Greg McMullen
You’re talking about a guy who started every game last year, and has already played in 24 games in his career.
While there are likely areas McMullen wants to improve on, his durability has been a major asset, and will need to continue to be as NU tries to build depth at defensive end. He had 47 tackles, nine for loss, and four sacks last year, and may be ready to build on those in a more attacking scheme.
kAmq@EE@> =:?6i w6 92D E96 >@DE 6IA6C:6?46 2E 2 A@D:E:@? E92E 92D 76H 8FJD H:E9 2?J]k^Am
3. Josh Banderas
Football has become more fun for the junior linebacker. He's seemed to thrive this spring with a new defensive scheme, and a new outlook.
Given his heavy responsibility at middle linebacker, and the fact nobody besides Rose-Ivey is even halfway down the first-base line on all that goes with that role, and the fact it was just announced senior David Santos is no longer on the team … yeah, Banderas belongs high on a list like this.
2. Tommy Armstrong
Whatever you think of Armstrong's game, the quarterback's experience matters plenty to Riley.
The coach has brought it up often this offseason. He knows the value of having a quarterback who has been out there before, who has seen the good and the bad, and hopefully learned from it. It's still not known what exactly Nebraska has behind Armstrong. Zack Darlington and AJ Bush had stepping stone springs, but they are also redshirt freshmen who have not yet stepped where Armstrong has stepped.

1. Maliek Collins
While there's depth at defensive tackle, there is no more talented player on Nebraska’s roster than Collins.
He has all the tools to be first-team all-conference or more, the type of player who can open up opportunities for everybody around him on the D-line. If you want to chase championships, you need difference-makers like Collins. Guys who throw running backs down to the ground like he's their kid brother, as Collins did in the Miami game. Others feed off such dominance. That was a Blackshirts play.
