Let's take a look at how the Nebraska football roster shakes out when you break it down by scholarship numbers. Click through the slideshow to view each position.
Quarterbacks
On scholarship (6): Tommy Armstrong, Ryker Fyfe (seniors); Tanner Lee (junior); AJ Bush, Zack Darlington (sophomores); Patrick O’Brien (freshman).
How’s it look? The addition of the transfer Lee was a smart play if you think a year ahead. Armstrong and Fyfe will be gone. That leaves four scholarship quarterbacks, and that’s only if no one transfers. “It provides us more competition in a transition period after Tommy graduates," Riley said.
Offensive line
On scholarship (16): Paul Thurston, Dylan Utter, Corey Whitaker (seniors); Zach Hannon, Dwayne Johnson, David Knevel (juniors); Tanner Farmer, Gerald Foster, Nick Gates (sophomores); Jalin Barnett, Michael Decker, Christian Gaylord (redshirt freshmen); Bryan Brokop, Matt Farniok, John Raridon, Boe Wilson (freshmen).
How’s it look? Four scholarship linemen graduated, four new linemen were signed. "I like the number and I like the talent," Riley said. Farniok and Raridon are both four-star talents, and Brokop and Wilson show very well on tape. You still wonder about tackle. Farniok is the only one in the 2016 class. The Huskers know they have one really good tackle in Gates, but who rises up on the other side?
Running backs
On scholarship (5): Terrell Newby (senior); Adam Taylor (junior); Devine Ozigbo, Mikale Wilbon (sophomores); Tre Bryant (freshman).
How's it look? Not bad at all, considering Nebraska's newest running back, Bryant, is a do-everything guy who takes as much pride in blocking as racking up rushing yards. Perhaps you read Bryant's Signing Day announcement: "Most don't understand what football means to me. It's not just a hobby, game or activity, it's literally a part of my being." Game on.
Receivers/tight ends
Wide receivers on scholarship (9): Alonzo Moore, Brandon Reilly, Jordan Westerkamp (seniors); De’Mornay Pierson-El (junior); Stanley Morgan, Keyan Williams (sophomores); Lavan Alston (redshirt freshman); Derrion Grim, JD Spielman (freshmen).
Tight ends on scholarship (6): Cethan Carter, Sam Cotton, Trey Foster (seniors); Matt Snyder (redshirt freshman); Jack Stoll, David Engelhaupt (freshmen).

Linebackers
On scholarship (10): Josh Banderas, Michael Rose-Ivey (seniors); Marcus Newby (junior); Tyrin Ferguson, Luke Gifford, Dedrick Young (sophomores); Mohamed Barry (redshirt freshmen); Quayshon Alexander, Pernell Jefferson, Greg Simmons (freshmen).
How's it look? Banker said Simmons was the top linebacker on the coaches' board. And Alexander has the size and versatility to be a linebacker/D-end hybrid. Remember last fall camp when you thought you might have to play linebacker for NU? After adding three linebackers in each of the past two classes, things are much improved. That's important, because a lot of those guys are used on special teams, too.
Defensive backs
Safeties on scholarship (8): Nate Gerry, Charles Jackson (seniors); Kieron Williams (junior); Antonio Reed, Aaron Williams (sophomores); Avery Anderson (redshirt freshman); Tony Butler, JoJo Domann (freshmen).

Special teams
On scholarship (4): Sam Foltz (senior); Drew Brown (junior); Jordan Ober (sophomore); Caleb Lightbourn (freshman).
How’s it look? Why did the Huskers sign another kicker? There's good reason. After Foltz and Brown graduate, the hope is Lightbourn could handle both place-kicking and punting, "overlapping scholarships” of the key kicking positions. “We think this guy talentwise is special," Riley said. "You've got to kind of plan ahead and make sure those bases are covered."
