Frost praises QB Martinez
Scott Frost knows a thing or two about evaluating quarterbacks.
He knows when he thinks he's found a good one.
Even in a conference call when he said he liked to heed Tom Osborne’s advice of never calling anybody more than a "good player," lest expectations spiral too far out of control, the new Nebraska head coach couldn’t contain his excitement about Adrian Martinez.
“When I was evaluating quarterbacks for this class a long time ago, Adrian was my favorite guy in the country,” Frost said Wednesday. “We didn’t think we had a chance to get him at our previous school, but now getting to Nebraska, he was interested.
“He can run it, he can throw it and he’s a very mature kid,” Frost said. “I think he’s ready for the challenges in front of him.”
One of the first challenges will be knocking off some rust. Martinez accumulated 2,562 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and four interceptions, and added 1,462 rushing yards (8.0 per carry) and 14 more scores as a junior but didn’t play his senior year after having shoulder surgery in March.
Still, he was the first player offered by the staff, receiving a phone call from quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco within an hour or so of Central Florida beating Memphis in the American Athletic Conference title game on Dec. 2. Verduzco visited the next day, Martinez visited campus Dec. 9, and then Verduzco and Frost visited again the following week.
